Boricha Agriculture Project Brings Hope and Transformation
The Boricha Agriculture and Livelihood Project, implemented by Meserete Kristos Church Development Commission (MKC-DC) with support from Mennonite Central Committee Ethiopia, is making remarkable strides in transforming lives and landscapes across Sidama.
Empowering Farmers and Families
- 460
lead farmers (290 men, 170 women) trained in conservation agriculture,
vermiculture, and effective microorganism (EM) technologies.
- Adoption
has spread to 2,300 follower farmers, with over 1,700 already
practicing CA.
- Vermiculture
is thriving: 445 farmers produced 1,568 quintals of compost,
boosting soil fertility and generating income.
Inclusion and Equity
- 186
persons with disabilities received business training and poultry
support, enabling them to start income-generating activities.
- Gender
equity is central: women now lead in SHGs, savings, and small businesses.
Strong Community Networks
- 21
Self-Help Groups (SHGs) mobilized 520,230 ETB in savings and
disbursed 150,000 ETB in loans, empowering members to launch
businesses in poultry, petty trade, and woodwork.
- Local
authorities and community leaders actively collaborate, ensuring
sustainability and ownership.
Visible Impacts
- 85
hectares of land restored through organic farming, cover crops, and
minimum tillage.
- Farmers
report improved soil fertility, reduced erosion, and diversified diets
through vegetable production.
- Surplus
crops and worms are now sold in local markets, strengthening household
incomes.
Recognition and Inspiration
- 60
best-performing farmers were honored with farm tools in a ceremony
attended by woreda officials and community leaders.
- Documented
success stories showcase resilience, innovation, and inclusion.
Looking Ahead
The project plans to scale up climate-smart agriculture,
strengthen SHGs through financial linkages, and deepen collaboration with local
authorities. With growing government interest in adopting these practices,
Boricha is becoming a model of sustainable, inclusive development.
From erratic rainfall and food insecurity to restored
soils and empowered families, Boricha is writing a new story of resilience and
hope. The seeds of change are sprouting into a future of dignity, prosperity,
and peace.
